The Rational Case for Christianity

A logically ordered, evidence-based framework (Modules 1–12), NKJV citations.

Intro

This page presents a concise, modular condensation of a classical 12-step apologetic framework. It proceeds from Epistemology (truth) → Metaphysics (God's existence) → History (Resurrection & NT reliability) → Christology (Jesus' identity) → Bibliology (Scripture) → Worldview (exclusive truth). All Scripture quotations are NKJV.

Apologetics Field Manual (12 Modules)

Each card can be expanded/collapsed. "Validation Task" gives you a concrete way to test or teach the point.

Claim: Truth corresponds to reality; relativism is self-defeating.

Core Claim Counterclaim Quick Rebuttal
Truth is knowable and objective. "There is no absolute truth." Self-refuting: is that absolutely true?

Validation Task: Test self-referential statements for contradiction.

Memory Hook: Truth stands whether believed or not.

Claim: Mutually exclusive claims cannot both be true.

Core Claim Counterclaim Quick Rebuttal
Truth excludes its opposite. "All religions lead to God." Contradictory God-claims cannot be equally true.

Validation Task: Contrast two incompatible doctrines.

Memory Hook: Truth narrows paths.

Claim: Whatever begins to exist has a cause; the universe began; therefore a First Cause exists.

Evidence Objection Rebuttal
Big Bang, thermodynamics, causality. "Universe uncaused." Actual infinite regress is incoherent in time.

Validation Task: Explain why "self-caused" is a contradiction.

Memory Hook: No cause? No cosmos.

Claim: Fine-tuning and DNA's specified information indicate design.

Evidence Objection Rebuttal
Life-permitting constants; information theory. "Multiverse did it." Multiverse is untestable and pushes fine-tuning up a level.

Validation Task: Illustrate specified vs. random complexity.

Memory Hook: Design demands a Designer.

Claim: Objective moral "oughtness" implies a transcendent Moral Lawgiver.

Evidence Objection Rebuttal
Cross-cultural moral intuitions. "Morality evolved." Evolution describes behavior, not binding obligation.

Validation Task: Distinguish "is" vs. "ought".

Memory Hook: Law implies Lawgiver.

Claim: The Creator is not constrained by created regularities (laws describe what God usually does).

Core Idea Objection Rebuttal
Cause > effect principle. "Miracles violate laws." Laws are descriptive, not prescriptive on God.

Validation Task: Show why "violation" language misframes divine action.

Memory Hook: Lawmaker > laws.

Claim: The Resurrection best explains the empty tomb, appearances, and immediate Christian proclamation.

Fact Natural Theory Weakness
Empty tomb Wrong tomb Easily refuted by producing body.
Group appearances Hallucination Hallucinations are not collective.
Transformed skeptics Legend Too early; early creed ≤ 5 years.

Validation Task: Compare hypotheses with Bayesian "best explanation".

Memory Hook: History has a signature.

Claim: The NT text is early, abundant, and cross-verified.

Metric NT Typical Ancient Work
Earliest fragment ~A.D. 125 ~500–1,000 yrs after
Manuscripts (all witnesses) > 20,000 < 1,000
Textual agreement ~99.5% n/a

Validation Task: Read one NA/UBS apparatus note; note doctrine unaffected.

Memory Hook: History holds up the Word.

Claim: Jesus claimed divinity and authenticated it.

Option Assumes Problem
Liar Knew He was false Contradicts moral perfection.
Lunatic Delusional Inconsistent with coherent teaching.
Legend Myth growth Too early for legend; eyewitness core.
Lord Told truth Only view fits evidence.

Validation Task: Evaluate claims under criterion of embarrassment & multiple attestation.

Memory Hook: Evidence points to Lord.

Claim: Predictive prophecy and the Resurrection converge on Jesus' divinity.

Category Example Note
Birthplace Mic 5:2 → Mt 2:1 Specific geography.
Betrayal Zech 11:12 → Mt 26:15 Specific amount.
Death Ps 22; Is 53 → Gospels Pre-crucifixion texts.

Validation Task: Compare LXX/MT where quoted; note doctrine stable.

Memory Hook: History validated by prophecy.

Claim: If Jesus is God, His words carry divine authority in truth and ethics.

Position Claim Counter
Relativism "All truth is subjective." Self-refuting.
Utilitarian Naturalism Morality = survival strategy Explains "is," not "ought".

Validation Task: Map an ethical issue under "is vs. ought".

Memory Hook: Truth → trust → transformation.

Claim: Jesus treats Scripture as God's speech; He commissions Apostles (basis for NT canon).

Axis Jesus' Stance Modern Position Takeaway
Inspiration Mt 22:31; Jn 10:35 Verbal/plenary or limited High view aligns with Jesus.
Canon Lk 24:44; Jn 14:26 Recognition vs. invention Church received apostolic writings.

Validation Task: Trace Athanasius 367 → Carthage 397 lists.

Memory Hook: Christ confirmed the Canon.

Claim: Inspiration implies truth in what Scripture affirms (inerrancy, authority, sufficiency).

Validation Task: Identify an alleged contradiction and check genre/context/textual notes.

Memory Hook: God breathed it—God meant it.

Claim: Contradictory worldviews cannot all be true; Christianity uniquely fits the full evidential chain.

Worldview Resurrection Data Parsimony Coherence
Christian Theism Explains High Strong
Naturalism Denies Low (ad hoc) Weak on morality/meaning
Deism Denies miracles Medium Partial only

Validation Task: Run a comparative "explanatory scope" checklist across views.

Memory Hook: One truth, not many.

Objection & Response Index (Condensed)

Domain Objection Core Weakness Rapid Response Ref. Modules
Epistemic "Truth is relative." Self-refuting Ask: "Is that absolutely true?" 1–2
Metaphysical "Universe uncaused." Infinite regress Every effect needs a first cause. 3A
Teleological "Design = chance." Probability collapse Fine-tuning far beyond chance. 3B
Moral "Morality evolved." Describes 'is,' not 'ought' Obligation implies Lawgiver. 3C, 9
Miraculous "Science disproves miracles." Category error Science studies regularities; miracles are acts of God. 4–5
Historical "NT corrupted." Evidence contrary ~99.5% agreement; early and abundant mss. 6
Christological "Jesus myth." Too early for legend 1 Cor 15 creed ≤ 5 years post-event. 7–8
Bibliological "Canon arbitrary." Apostolic continuity Church recognized, not invented, canon. 10
Worldview "All faiths equal." Contradiction Truth excludes opposites. 11–12
